Before You Go: Medical Preparation
Proper health preparation is one of the most important parts of solo Amazon travel. Most health risks are preventable with advance planning.
See a Travel Medicine Doctor
Schedule an appointment 6–8 weeks before your trip with a travel medicine specialist or your regular doctor. Bring your trip dates and specific destinations—recommendations vary by location.
Essential Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever: Required/strongly recommended. Protection lasts 10 years. Some countries require proof of vaccination.
- Hepatitis A: Highly recommended. Prevents food/water-borne illness.
- Typhoid: Recommended. 3-year protection.
- Routine vaccines: Ensure MMR, tetanus, etc. are current.
Malaria Prophylaxis
Malaria risk varies by location and season. Your doctor will recommend:
- Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) — effective, fewer side effects
- Doxycycline — cheaper, requires sun protection
- Mefloquine (Lariam) — weekly dosing, mood side effects possible
⚠ Important
Start malaria prophylaxis before travel as directed by your doctor (typically 1–2 days before and 4 weeks after). Don't skip doses.
Additional Medications to Bring

- Pain reliever/fever reducer (ibuprofen, acetaminophen)
